if you're just doing a service, why do you need to remove them?

the selector should just pull of when you undo the 13 mm nut on the shaft
the torque bit for the valve is a T 30 bit

you're not taking the whole selector shaft out are you? if you are, that's gonna have to have the box out. and if you're going that far into it, you may as well recon the thing while you're there. recon kit you should be able to pick up for under $400. if the shaft just has rust on it where the neutral start switch goes and that's why you want it out, don't bother, clean the rust off, smear grease all over it and put the switch back on.
and as mentioned, it's a t-30 from memory there's 13 bolts that hold the valve body on. make sure you unplug all the wires and get em out of the way before you undo those bolts or you'll probably damage the wiring.

Looks like I will have to take the trans out to complete the job. :D

it is a bit fiddly but it can be done by someone who has a bit of patience and mechanical ability

Belated thankyou to bret4777.
Job went well when I did it back in 2005.
I got the shaft out without taking the trans out.
