hi
im trying to find an alternative shift insulator for the t5 shift.. i just rang ford and the want $135 for the rubber insulator.. so for the moment ive got the shift bolted straight on with no rubber insulator. but i havnt driven it yet... i would really like a nolathane one but no one does one that i know of.. does anyone know if there is any after market ones available..?? or does anyone know if the holden t5 uses the same type of rubber insulator..?? how many of you guys have got the gear shift bolted on without the insulator ..?? |

From what I've read on these forums after the shifter install its a little bit louder in the cabin from gearbox noise but the shift is a lot surer and exact.
There is a quite a few people here who don't have insulators. |

i run a custom stainless short shifter (around 4inches by itself) without insulation & wouldn't turn back.

ELGT one is Nolathane, pretty cheap too from memory, but will not accept screw on gear knob, only slip on type with 3 grub screws.
When running without insulator, alot of gear mesh noise is heard (especially if you sit a 1.5 litre water bottle onto gear knob) and you will hear alot of rattling higher in RPM, but its a very firm shift... |

I run a Harropp shifter mech, factory stick with no insulator at all, and its about 1.5" total throw. Its been there for a while now.... Last edited by ELGT on Sat Jan 20, 2007 5:51 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

yer mines been in quite a while although i haven't measured total throw.
just a billet stainless shifter bolted on with two M8 s/s SHCS with no mounts & it's a far better improvement on the previous shifter.

well i took it for a drive and the shifts are heaps better especially from 2nd to 3rd.. the rubber bit was flogged out big time it use to feel like i had a banana for a gear shift very sloppy lol.. and when you changed gears the shift had an extra 1" 1/2 give in the rubber...
but it does rattle a little bit on gear changes if you give it heaps. and little bit when the engine revs right out... but i think a new rubber would be best but ill leave it out for the moment.. |

My EF one is like new but the EA one was well worn, what I did was to grind down the metal tubes so that the rubber was making better contact with the sides.

Good to see a few others pulling the rubber insulator out. I did it a while ago and found out how much it improved the shift feel, thought I'd share what I did and got critisized by most.....

Until I read this thread I'd never really thought about removing the rubber block. Did it on the weekend and shifts are a lot crisper and I never noticed any extra noise in the cab. And if I did I would just turn the stereo up.

I had this 10 years ago with my XD (Clevo - T5 didnt last too long
 )
But - I found a set of 4 nolathane bushes that did fit (2 on each side) - they were for a morris or a mini or something. Swaybar bushes. I custom-made the rod in the middle to fit, and bolted that on. Was an incredibly nice shift (Shortened shifter), and not harsh. Also didnt transmit NVH. I still have it somewhere - in case I ever buy a car with a T5 I guess. |
