the T5 in my EL (factory) has a slight rattle/sound when sitting in neutral when its hot - doesnt seem to have any other probs, shifts ok, has a bit of whine in 2nd/3rd (but my previous T5 had that tooo...)
i changed the oil (it had ATF in it, changed it to 75-80 semi-synth gearbox oil) but it hasnt made any real difference. is this normal or... does it mean i should start looking for a new box? the car has ~ 160'000km on it, and not many mods (extractors in the last 10,000kms...)

does it go away when you lightly depress the clutch? or change noise at all? Just to put pressure on the thrust bearing, but not disengage it?

When you depress the clutch, ( in nuetral, engine idling) and the noise goes away, its bearings in the box. If its still there whilst clutch depressed, then a noisy throw-out bearing.
If the box still shifts good and doesn't jump out of gear, then get yours reconditioned.

Get yours rebuilt, its only bearings. I have a list of Timken bearing numbers if you want them.
