How many K's on it? Sounds like it must have a few, you bought it for $800.
It may be better to put in a new dizzy. I think the dizzy gears are about $50 to $60 from ford.

The dizzy is driven by a short shaft spun by the timing chain. The 'bearing surface' for the shaft can be worn excessively when not lubricated properly which causes all sorts of problems, the worse being the eventual welding of the shaft to the block which starts a chain reaction that will break just about ever part of the engine internally.
You can pull it apart and check it out but if there is wear and tear is this area the easiest fix is usually to drop in a low k replacement engine.

I just replaced mine a couple of days ago, man that was fun. Get a gregory's manual and follow it. It took me and my dad a decent while (~15 hrs) and the shaft and timing cover gaskets etc together cost ~$300 from ford. It's called an auxillary shaft and once you get to it it's really easy.
You will need to undo the sump to let the timing cover to come off (FYI). Good luck mate!
