G'day
Just a quick question about the xf computers, Can you get (or do you need) a chip for them or do you need a piggy back ecu. I'm not planning any turbos or that sort of thing but i am planning a significant power upgrade. I know nothing about the ecu's in this car. Cheers

Cheers Apparently you can get a chip for them, but I wouldn't bother, it is a shocking EFI setup. Two biggest problems with 4.1 EFI: Vacuum leaks and Vane air flow meter, plenty of other problems but these two have given me the most grief, as I have own one, best mate had one (it gave us hell), currently another friend has one ( twice I fixed the running rough by either tightening the oil cap or pushing the dipstick back in)and I worked in a Ford dealership with lots of headaches. Either go aftermarket or wait for XR9UTE or others to post some more helpful information on how to upgrade to later EFI.

damage is right, for an EFI system, it's f**k useless
besides the problems with vacuum leaks and the AFM, you cant put a decent cam in a EFI 4.1 without the computer getting all s**t about it

That been the case how do you get around it.
Do you to have to go aftermarket or can you adapt another computer from say an eb to work? Cheers

you can either go aftermarket or rewire the whole setup and use an EB comp.... lot of trouble though..... XR9UTE was talking about a kit to use a later EECIV setup in XF's

I know you said it would be hard to rewire an eb computer, but how hard.
Is it a case of just running new wiring to the same sensors or are there different sensors. If all i have to do is re run the new wiring pattern i dont think it would be that hard. Cheers

Use a computer pre EB Smartlock - so EA would be good. Also make sure you get a manual computer (or EA one with stand-alone tranny control).
Get the ECU Wiring harness from the EB/EA, and your mostly home. Most of the sensors are in the same place, Use the XF Dizzy (It should be TFI if it was MPI before hand). You'll need to add the MAP, IAT, and ECT sensors from the EB but thats about it, and the XF should have room for all of em. You'll have to graft the wiring harness a little bit, but theres no reason it has to be too hard. XF's used an EEC-IV ECU as well so you should be able to use the exisitng fuel pump relay and power supply for the EEC as well as feeds from the Speed sender. Its a little messy but not nearly as hard as a conversion from Carby to EEC, or from XE (Bosch injection) to XF MPI Nigel |

Thanks for that.
Seen as i am new to all of this injection stuff, what is the MAP, IAT and ECT sensors. Now that i know it is possible i'm just gona splice the 2 harnesses together. Are the plugs the same from xf to ea. if so i should be able to do this easily. Cheers

Just had a thought.
When i was thinking about putting a windsor in i was told that a delco ecu from a commonw**re could be used instead of the standard computer. The reason i was told to use it is becasue it is readily programable for better performance. Can it be used with the 250 injection setup? Cheers

If i'm gone be rewiring an eb computer it will be about the same.
Is there any advantage to running the delco over the ford unit? Can the delco be modified to run more kw than the ford unit. Cheers

IIRC the sony scorcher ran a delco unit......
dunno about the differences, but AFAIK, the delco's are more easily programmable as the computer wont change the settings over time, but i think tweecer might be able to overcome that feature on the ford ECU..... might be a good idea to talk to someone who knows thier s**t with the tweecer's
