well as the EL fairmont has the extra gauges for oil and battery power, i was watching my power get down pretty low, went outside and idled the car for a little while and click, something turned on and up went the power reading.

my question is does the fairmont to conserve power from the engine turn the alternator on here and there when need be?

if not... is it a problem, and whats the fix?

or if so, damn thats cool.

Don't know if this is relevant to the e-series but in the old x series if you left the car idling on startup (ie. no extra revs at all) the alternator wouldn't kick in. So when you start the car you have to give it a bit of a rev. Maybe in the e-series they got round this with a relay of some sort :?

e-series they'll charge as soon as it fires.
if the battery light was on, it sounds like you've got a crook alternator.
the number 1 cause is from a leaking p/steer pump, so check that out and repair both if necessary.
