Are there any major problems with using a 302 performance cam in a 5.0l efi engine? Plug leads and injector wires will need to be changed to suit 302 firing order, anything else? Is 5.0l dizzy ok with flat tappet cam? :?: :?:

You'll need to change to a cast iron distributor gear. You'll need longer pushrods because the flat tappet lifters are shorter. You'll need to rewire the injector firing order which will cause the most major problem; this is concerned with the HEGO's for each bank. The different firing order will cause problems like dangerous lean conditions due to the injector firing order not matching the HEGO bank and pulse delay.
If however you have a TwEECer you can change the firing order to suit your cam and everything is sweet.
Having said all that my question is why?
Hyd roller is the way to go and even if you did go flat tappet just get a 351W cam and the firing order is the same.

I bought the flat tappet cam, roller rockers, 347 stroker kit , longer pushrods etc then started to find a few more differences between the 2 engines. Does 351w cam need cast iron dizzy cog?

302 windsor block is similar to 5.0l windsor efi engine. Mine is '97 EL xr8. It's bored to .030" over, I'm in the process of refitting it with stroker gear. I've bought and had balanced crank, rods, flat top pistons. Also fitting victor jnr heads, edelbrock performer rpm II intakes, 75mm throttle body & egr plate, hv oil pump w/ arp drive. Double gear timing chain for 302w wouldn't fit, flat tappet cam for 302w has different firing order. I've had supplied wrong sized bigend bearings, wrong thickness rings. I read somewhere that flat tappets in a performance engine were the way to go but maybe I've been misinformed. Any suggestions on a good street cam setup or eec setup would be greatly appreciated. Despite these minor setbacks it's still good fun and a big learning curve!!!

Keep the roller cam! Much much less maintinance...
As said in other posts Cranes 2030 and 2031 is ideal.. The TFS 1 cam for alittle more agro cam...
Unless you have good breathing heads valve lift over .500 is almost wasted as heads won't breath at much higher lifts...These all require up graded valve springs...
With "better" breathing heads IMO the exhaust timing doesn't require as much timing ...

The 5.0 EFI is the same firing order as the clevo 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
The only windsors that had a different f.o. were the 289W & 302W.

Yes the 351w Flat tappet cam will use a cast iron dizzy gear. Steel roller cams use steel gears.
5.0's have a metric ring pack too.
Sell off all the flat tappet stuff and get a roller.
What comp are you running with that gear?

Thanks fellas, you've talked me into sticking with the roller cam setup. I'll chase up a decent roller cam. @ moment I only have original '97 EL xr8 auto computer but from what I can gather they are a pig to change tuning. I'm looking and listening for a good comp to whack in without too much fuss to fiddle with.

Let me know the catch code of your EEC. There may be TwEECer support for your EEC.

Cheers,
Pete.
