A new set of engine mounts did the trick.

AU mounts with adapters. The old hydraulic ones looked OK but had obviously collapsed internally.

The symptoms were:

Mirror shaking roughness/resonance at idle in Drive - not so bad in Neutral, a bit better when the engine was hot. No problems when travelling at speed.

I originally thought it to be an idle problem cause of the roughness occurring at idle, but my idle wasn't varying (ie stayed constantly around 650rpm) so that ruled out things like the ISC and Cam Angle Sensor.

There was never any knocking or exessive movement from the engine, just the annoying bloody resonance that would make you put it in Neutral at lights and wonder if the guy in the EF next to you was suffering the same thing.

I also had the gearbox mount replaced when it was serviced as it looked a bit weathered.

Anyway, I hope this helps any EF/EL owners who are going through the same thing.

how much did it set you back?

The mounts cost me $38 each, the brackets $32 each - so $140.00 for bits but they were trade price from a mate. You can get them from Blacktown Auto Spares cheaper than Ford though.

I started to change them myself but got p****d off after removing all the drivers side bolts and decided to get my mechanic to do it - best $77 I ever spent.

Grand total: $217.00 installed.

I guess anywhere up to $300 installed would be reasonable. Of course if you have an EL you dont need the brackets as the mounts fit straight on.
