My odometer and the tripmeter have just stopped working. Neither is ticking over. The speedo and tacho are still working fine as are all the other guages (eg. oil, temp. etc.). The problem first started when I went to reset the tripmeter. I pushed in the reset button and then both the trip and odometer stopped working.
I should mention that I recently had the air conditioning repaired which led to them removing and replacing the dash. Could it be that something wasn't plugged back in properly when they did that? |

there is a small plastic gear inside the cluster which works the odo and trip metre, they break with age, you can get them from an auto elec for about $10 but can be a bit fiddly to put in

So you need to remove the cluster and get at the odometer to stick it in? Is this something I could attempt on my own or should I just ask an auto-electrician to do it?

That's naughty. Plus it's a 94 with 170k so winding it back might arouse suspicion.

i recently did mine. same thing happened. got another cluster from a wrecker for $35. pulled it all apart, got out gear needed and put it in my original one. you can just get another cluster but then you lose your original km's. that is why i fiddled around as mine is only 72000km's. the bit you have to be careful of is pulling off the needle. i got lucky with my original that i was fixing but the one i got from the wrecker for parts, the whole bit with the cog on it came out and that was it. no good. so if you do it yourself just bear that in mind.
very fiddly. about 20 screws on the back of the cluster. need patience. a low km cluster goes for a coupla hundy though so well worth the effort to fix yourself.
