Lower guide is placed in there pretty good.
Removing the head is a far bigger job than just the timing cover. I'd lower the sump! If you drop the guide, theres a pretty good chance you can fish it out with some ingenuity. The baffle in the sump at the font is too small for the guide to fall in IIRC.

yer i done that a while ago all went ok at best, alot of cursing, lost bark n heartache.
imho it's an a$$ of a job n best off pulling the motor out n doin it out of the car because after popping the sump you need to replace the gasket & if you have a one piece rubber gasket it has to go into the sump n around the pump then back out to get it on. n cork gaskets are 4 piece & are so much fun to put back on in the car i used my old gasket n half a tube of copper rtv silicone. i also built up the ridge the bottom tensioner sits on with weld so it was nice n tight on there, or i think in gregory's it says to silicone it on to stop it dropping back in on installation. will also help liftin the a$$end of the car up to get a better center of gravity for the cover when takin the old one out.

the joint between the head n the timing case is the least of your worries if your leaving the head on as when you install you will insert upwards... with lots of silicone.
if you have to change the head gasket it's best to do it all at once. alot less heartache at least.
