hey guys i am about to start my turbo install but want to do all the piping and exaust work myself. will leave the manifold to the pros though. what i need to know is how many amp should a mig welder have to do pipe work. any other advice with buying a mig welder at all? ps i will be using 3'' stainless steel pipe

...then wouldn't you want a TIG to do stainless?

lol fair enough. i have only ever welded alloy and mild steel. so a tig is the only welder i can use?

Get a TIG for that. You can control the weld and get nicer welds.
A mig is for rough work and gives lots of build up and splatter. Mig is alot quicker but I use it for heavier stuff. For lighter stuff like exhaust and intercooler piping I always use TIG. Most Exhaust guys use MIG for its speed.

any idea how powerful u need to weld 2-3mm thick piping? might just end up hiring one but would be so handy to have my own.

If you are going to use 3" stainless piping (i assume its going to be light gauge ie 1.2-2 maybe 2.4mm wall) then i wouldnt weld it with a mig unless it is a fluxcored stainless wire. If you were to weld it, It MUST be purged internally otherwise it will look like a hairy caterpillar has settled in your pipe. This is the weld metal reacting with the atmosphere (without any shielding gas internally) and is brittle and a flow restriction. And if your welding is lumpier in a few spots, it can break off and end up going down track.
I'd stay with aluminium so you can use a thicker wall pipe. Any mig can run aluminum if you use teflon liners, straight argon shielding gas. Or just go to a joint that does Marine fabrication and repairs and get em to do a quick weld here and there for a carton.

Around 22 volts depending on the mig

Use alloy for your IC pipes, its about the same $ as stainless and get it TIG'd up at a shop... usually charge 20 per weld
