I had a few dramas the other night when driving home, i was doing about 50km and wanted to kick it back into 2nd to overtake a sunday driver. When i put my foot down the engine would just free rev like it's in park. Every since then i seemed to have lost 2nd gear altogether and 4th gear only engages on very light throtle.

I did a ECU diagnostic and the code it spat out was for a faulty S7 solenoid in the auto.

My question is how hard is it to change a S7 solenoid in these boxes (BTR 95le), i changed the S2 about 6 months ago. It's done 350,000 on the orginal box so should i just go for a reco box and be done with it or just change the S7 and see how it goes.

S7 IIRC is the solenoid for the torque converter clutch...

Which doesnt seem like it would affect 2nd/4th..

4-2 kick down uses S1, 2 and 3...

Does 2nd work when you put the selector in 2nd?

nope, it's either 1st or 3rd with the occasional 4th

Sounds like you have a problem with the front band as it is used in both 2&4 gears. Or maybe a problem with the front servo piston.
