I went to assist Till_Lind about 10 min ago, as he was broken down.
The power steering pulley has shattered into many pieces and all that's left is the metal ring on the shaft. My question is - How do you remove the metal ring? Thanks.

Also does anyone know the best pulley to replace the one that broke up? Genuine Ford? Or does someone make a metal one that wont' die?
Any other info on removal of old, installation of new, would be great. Thanks to smoke_ for the thread too.

They are pressed on. To get them off, you have to pull it apart completly, then the shaft will come out.
Or you can go and spend $150+ on a custom made pulley remover. They did make a few metal ones, by a few, i mean around 200 across aus. So pretty, rare. And go genuine, the aftermarket ones just recently a very large amount of pulleys got sent out to everyone and they werent set properly. So when they put them on their cars, they exploded and the company was up for new pumps and a fair few radiators. The moral, go genuine on this, there just might be some dodgy ones still out there. Thats my two cents, thanks for joining me.

or u could use the proper tool so u dont have to strip it all apart. i got change out of $100 for it from snap on and it takes 5 minutes to pull the pulley off and about 2 minutes to put one back on.
if u dont wanna pay that, take the pump off and with new pulley go to a reputable workshop cos they'll have the tool.

if your handy with a welder and a grinder you could easy knock up a decent puller up in no time, well thats what i did anyways had it off in seconds and saves paying near $100 for something ya probly anit gunner use again anytime soon. love the homemade tools most work better than of the shelf gear.

Here's a picture of the damage. Does the pulley come as just the pulley, or as the pulley and the shaft too? Because the shaft looks to be removable, seems to need like a giant hex key or rachet drive to remove it?
Here's the receipt for when I got a mechanic to install my new power steering pump, he had to change the pulley too apparantly. 
20/10/05 that was, is life expentency of the pulley about spot on? What is my best course of action. 1. Go see a mechanic? 2. Buy parts and do it myself, somehow? Thanks lads, appreciated.

Okay, Q Ford can supply a new pulley, remove old, install new, all for $100. How that sound? That's about $50 for part, $50 for labour (remove old pulley, install new pulley). Monday morning.
Guess I'll ahve to wait a little longer to get the air con back to tip top now. : ' (

maybe this had something to do with your idle problems till? has the power steering been acting up a bit lately mate? I haven't heard of these things disintegrating before. whats a reco power steering pump worth?

Yeah, I've pondered about the idle issues sam, but I really have no idea.
Power steering has been fine. Recon power steering pump? I think mine will be fine mate, barely drove it once it started playing up, was just a few metres to the bay I pulled into. Power steering pump is a new AU spec one as at about 10/05. Pulley was new (according to mechanic), 10/05 too. Yep, was good to see a friendly face (smoke_).

so you actually got the pulley replaced in 05? strewth how hard do you drive it/ how many kays have ya clocked up on it?
I have done about 50,000km in mine in 2 years from memory. no ps probs with the pulley. idler pulleys however are a different issue lol

Ummm, had about 111000km back then, now has about 147000km, lol. Could the idle pulley be what's fudging my idle up?
I drive it hard rarely.

idle pulleys are relatively cheap from say repco etc. there are other places you can get them from. are yours the factory plastic ones? check the bearings for looseness and did they make any racket before the pump pulley died?

The pulley is pressed on. That hex key is just for testing to make sure the veins throw out, before you put on a belt system.
I sell reco pumps for $80 now.
