Can anyone shed some light on why my 347[1000k's since rebuild] has blown a headgasket while on the dyno @ around 4000rpm,my tuner thinks that maybe since my builder had the motor retarded 20 degree's to get it running on the stock eec,that this would put an extreme amount of heat thru the heads and exhaust ports thus has probably weakened the gasket.
any thoughts true or false.

my engine builder was asking how hard was the tuner pushing it,but the tuner assures me it was no more than 4000 as we will go higher revs later when i have more k's on it.
at least its getting fixed on warranty.

Bit of a bummer that!!
Which Cyl went bang ??? If it was one of the back ones (4 or 8) then there's a good chance that it is a head gasket back to front (not hard to do even by experienced builders). Only real way to tell is to pull the head off and see where the gasket failed, but if it's under warranty then I guess you'll have to see what they say..

Yep they only have holes on one end for the coolant but they can be put on upside down.
The block and heads have coolant holes at both ends so if your not paying enough attention when putting em on it's easy to do them back to front.

Questions;
Why would he need to retard it so much(I assume you mean ignition timing?) to get it running? If he did that suggests other problems. Was the A/F ratio logged when this happened? How much load was it under when the failure occurred? What are the rest of the specs of this combo and I mean everything? Cheers, Pete. |

NfGia, if you put the head gasket on wrong it wouldnt last 5 mins let alone 1000ks. 20 degrees retarded, or is engine builder retarded

Also did u use the s**t ford head gasget or a felpro or ?
Im a dodge /val man now a ford person, (HATE HOLDEN)i have built many val 6 and v8 motors and found if you use a stock head gasget when you have moded the moter you will find it will s**t itself i have always been a fan of felpro head gastets as stock ones are a wast of time and money. If you are a fan of your car you will always use the best as in the end if you cut costs you pay doubble in the end.

I'll know mon-tues on the cause of the prob,my engine builder thinks its to do with pre-detination or car was too lean for the first 1000k's of running it in,said it should have been tuned earlier,not happy but he will fix for me at no cost,i'll post cause when i find out.

Geuine Ford gaskets are Felpro gaskets for starters, and did the rebuilder guy use new head bolts.???
If I remember, the head bolts must be replaced, same as the Explorer engines, and Taurus engines. Damn "Torque to yeild" sh!t bolts. Another one is to be careful not to get oil on the gasket surfaces when bolting it down, from the bolts being oiled. Trick is to pull down the head with the bolts dry, to about 20lb/ft, then one at a time, take them out and put oil on the threads. Never had a problem doing it this way.
