Could be your turbo falling off.
And no, that's not a joke :(
Old mans went in with a engine bay rattle, turned out to be turbo loose on the manifold.
Supposedly they are meant to be retensioned every service, but this is ford we are talking about

He's also had a shocking rattle at startup lately, think they fixed it this week, I'll have to ask him what it was.
loose on the manifold?? the car would go like a dog!

intercooler piping loose, and rattling against something, happens all the time when turbo cars get put under load, can get loose and rattle on something, but im not very familar with the XR6 turbo setup. My intercooler pipes on the XF rattle a bit, I will put some rubber on them when I get tje chance, but this is a different setup to your XR6 turbo no doubt.

The pipes are rubber dude, not gonna rattle lol

Mostlikely the heatshield as mentioned, mine rattled so its off now.

Detonation/pinging

exhaust manifold bolts come loose quickly, but mine have never caused a rattle

Mate i would definatly say it is the heat sheild for the cat. Check, it will be about 1 foot behind where the cat is i think. They are always rattling.

Get them to put another metal zip tie on the heat shielding if its rattling... if it continues to rattle it could be the cat, had a few of them, and the bracket going from dump pipe to block ?? i think always comes out. and yes exhaust manifold bolts SHOULD be tightened every service.

Now you have me worried!!!!

it is a very faint rattle - I hope im not gonna loose the turbs...

I forgot to mention I took it to my local ford workshop, they sent an old bloke out for a drive with me. he could hear the noise, but suggested i wait till the next serivce to see what it could be (next service is 7,000 Km's away) and in the mean-time keep an ear on it....

Seems like thats what all car dealers say "wait til the next service" cos they cant be f**k trying to figure out the problem...
You really have to ARC up at them and stand your ground.
Did you buy it brand new from the same ford dealership?

hey guys,
quick update - had the car into ford to look at this problem.

They said it was the heat shield arround the cat - they have removed it and im waiting on a replacement.

The noise seemed to go away :D , then today driving to work, i could hear it again (the heat-shield is still removed!) :(

its really pissing me off hearing this little rattle noise when i put load on the engine (doesnt have to be much either)
wtf?

On a better note, when i had the car in for the rattle noise, i told them about a small diff noise when the car is sitting at 100km p/h....

New diff is now on order - under warranty 8-)

It will either be the cat rattling internally or the bracket i mentioned that goes from the dump pipe to the block, the bolt always falls out of this tell them to loctite it and put it back in.
