Hey guys, changing the leads today and I noticed something that looks a bit like rust on the port 4 of the coil pack once i removed the lead. Have a look at the picture and tell me what you think. Should I just give it a clean, if yes, with what?

Here we go. The rest of them are as clean as a whistle.

Also found that I accidentally put in Tickford designed NGK sparkplugs when the head gasket was done. Could this be why my idle was pretty bad? Tickford spec. plug on the righ, proper EF Falcon 6 on the left. Considerable difference in size as you can see.

sucks to be you then

i doubt the plug would cause bad idle, unless it was gapped incorrectly

Get some high grade sand paper and take the surface rust off that coil pack connection, as rust will reduce the conductivity, which is not a good thing when it comes to ignitions at all.
O and don't ask me how the f**k you'll get down there to do it - remove the air box and arm through there maybe (don't get locked in under your bonnet now).

As for the plugs, shouldn't make too much difference at all, there's not much difference in them - consider how many duel fuel vehicles run them and there still stock as a rock when they run on petrol!

looks like a good 3mm difference in those plugs. that could mean the difference between hitting the piston and not.

but if it was running obviously it fits fine. id say your rough idle would be more likely to be to do witht he coil pack rust than the spark plugs.

as said just give it a bit of a rub back and put it all back in. youll be right.

Okay, I ran out of time while installing the new leads. Am I right to remove lead 4 at a later date and clean the surface rust off?

Yeah I know it'll be hard, but I just gotta squease my arm through and I can get there.

Dont' have to remove all the plugs in order or something hey? To remove the lead 4 right?

O and twr7cx, when you say high grade sand paper, you mean really smooth stuff?

After you have cleaned the rust off spray it with some WD 40 or similar then apply some silicone grease to the inside of the boot before refitting lead, this will stop any moisture from entering the boot and rusting the coil connection again.

Yeah, high grade is like 1000 grit, smooth. Low grade is like 40 grit, rough as guts - rougher even!
