found the cause of my steering rack leak
its leaking on top of pinion - the pinion case is held on with two allen bolts- are there seals/o rings in the top cover that can be replaced easy or is it a complete rebuild/replacement |

there is a top seal and an o-ring at the base of that housing, i can say they are a piece of piss to replace, but i rebuilt them for a living for a few years, you can replace the seal and o-ring without removing the rack from the car, it can be a bit of a pain tho, but you will also need the 2 o-rings for the pressure and return hoses, and also the 2 o-rings for the 2 crossover pipes, you don't want to fix a leak just to create another one.

another common area for leakage is the pressure switch.
easiest to cut it out & bridge out the sensor plug then whack a pressure plug in there.

no sorry i wish it was that easy 100% it is not the switch
it definately leaking from the pinion shaft |

leaks fixed and it was from top of pinion shaft not the switch
having never worked on a ps rack b4 it was a bit daunting but it actually was'nt that hard to repair and not all that expensive - a s**t cheaper than a new or recond rack ---- $13 for pinion seal kit and $18 for ford r1-424 oil and about 3 hours labour if anyone is interested i can explain wat i did |

ok its not real hard
parts needed : control valve tower leak kit #GLK-35000 or PSK019 $13 1ltr power steering fluid # ford r1-424 $18 i purchased parts from tranmission place ROWE & SEARLE in pultney st in adelaide remove ps rack from car clean rack b4 any disassembly - i took mine to the car wash and used the engine clean and high pressure spray and it c*m up a treat ensure rack is in centre position remove switch and tubes from pinion housing and undo two allen head bolts and remove pinion housing drive old oil seal and bearing from housing using suitable size drift or socket clean bearing & lube with some new ps oil and refit back into housing with new oil seal place pinion shaft in soft jaw vice or support shaft on block of wood and drive pin from the top of the pinion shaft and remove pinion remove o ring seal from the top of the inner shaft and lightly lube new o ring with some new ps oil and fit new seal reassemble shaft and refit pin replace all old o ring seals and assemble and refit to car fill with new oil and bleed this will only fix oil leak from pinion housing or shaft - not if its leaking from rack ends |
