it makes the noise in a stratght line, and it even grinds when turning on the spot, thats why i didnt think it was the bearings. im also sure its not the steering rack.

When the balljoints are really worn, they rub on the inside of the brake rotor. Get under it and have a look.

Check wheel bearings as when loose will allow rim of rotor to contact inside of caliper. often not obvious until you pull wheel.

sounds like the pump...will make a loud whirring sound when not running right.
Im going to asume that you have checked the levels, if full, blockage, if empty, well a leak. Got a reco one here for $80. 12 month warranty.

Jack the front of the car up, and get under there and wobble everything, give the tie rod ends a good shakin, the wheels, rack etc, see if something is loose, thats the first step, go from there.

You gotta jack it up to take the load off the steering assembly, otherwise it wont work, did you hold top and bottom of wheels when you wobbled them? thats bearings, side to side will be tie rod ends, rack, etc. With the weight off the steering, wobble your steering wheel side to side, i reckon there will be some play there to.
