g'day
hey you guys seem really helpful and seem like u know your way around fords abit, haha
anyways, im having some trouble at the moment
i have some springs to put in the front of my car
i own a 74 zg fairlane. i have my wheel off and want to get the old springs out and put these lowering
ones in. as i said my wheel is off, and (behind the wheel hub and disc their is sort of a wishbone looking thing that the spring rests on and the shock is attahced to) disconnected/popped out the ball jointy lookign thingy from under the wis boney thingy, (can u tell i dont know my way around steering and suspension gear?)

is what im doing the right thing?
i want to lower my car but i am having trouble.

i would appreciate it if you could give me a lil bit of advice

You need a spring compressor to do the job, safely. And a workshop manual too.

oh, u reckon??
i was after advice from anyone who had done it, as my workshop manual
doint exactly tell me.
the workshop manual is older then fred flintstone and doesnt exactly explain evertyhtheing

so yer, i was just after helpful advice from someone who had done this first hand,

Oh, sorry.....I have done about....I dunno....maybe about 150 to 200 of them. I do this stuff for a living, about the last 20yrs...seriously.

Alright mate...*shiftily looking both ways*... Here's what ya gotta do... Put the wheel back on & sit her back on the ground... Grab yourself an oxy torch... Make sure no one's watching. Wriggle under the car and evenly apply heat to your existing springs... Sooner or later the springs will start to MAGICALLY LOWER THEMSELVES!
Stop heating when you reach your desired ride-height, and there ya go. Lowered front end.
Just don't tell your dad. Or your mechanic.
Or the RTA.

HA HA seen that go bad a few times, home made progressive rate springs (colapsed coils).

I've got the same problem with my XC, Its getting fixed soon, but I asked my retired panel-beater/mechanic father about lowering cars and he told me about a pair of greek guys who'd JUST bought 2 brand new yellow XB GT coupes into his shop (were on the way home from the dealer - thats how new they were) and asked him to lower them both. My dad got the oxy torch ready, handed it to one of them, threw his hands up & said 'I ain't touchin' them, you do it yourself!'

srry cjh i was in a C*** of a mood that i was wiritntng them posts. haha srry
anyways, yer i have done the job, sitsgood and handles great
only thing is i wanna go about another inch or so lower,
im going to pull em out once i get my 20's and cut one coil of and throw em back in

btw when i put the new ones in i didnt even need to compress em hey, haha
was really surprised ive herd ppl do this b4 but i didnt think u could actually do it,
i thort it was just a joke , you know "oh i didnt even need to compress em to get em in there so low" i used to think yer yer wot ever, lol ah well.

just buy lwr springs for the front..
i've had two cars from essendon this week with
cut springs. 1 commo and 1 ef, both handled like s**t
and bounced for hours!!!!pay the money and do it once or
cheat first and pay later.

If you want it real low, you'd be better off with proper lowered spindle stubaxle assemblies. When you go really low, all you do is smash the bumpstops, and start cracking the body at the firewall. And they handle like sh!t when on the bumpstops, The shockies are at the top and no more travel left in them, no suspension travel, no handling.
Can get them from Castlemaine Rod Shop, about $600 to $700 a pair.

when i home lowered my first ZK 6cycl fairlane, i purchased the springs to do it.
i found that the lowest legal springs i purchased, where the same height as the ones that i pulled out of the car, they just didnt compress as much as the factory 4wd height ones did!

should also put some lowered shockies into the car as well, coz they are more designed to work with the shortened ride height - go too low, and your factory ones will not work effectively....

dont cut springs.... thats bad....
pay the money.. do it right....
even if it costs a lot, at least you know that it will be safe (and legal)

PAY THE MONEY BYE NEW LOWERED SPRINGS AND DONT BECOME A STATISTIC ANDDONT PUT OTHER DRIVERS AT RISK COZ YOUR A CHEAP SKATE....IF YOU CRASH YOUR CAR AND AN INVESTIGATION IS PERFORMED ON YOUR CAR COZ OF AN ACCIDENT YOUR INSURANCE WILL NOT BE VALID COZ OF BODGEE MODS TO YOUR SUSSPENSION..
