Why didnt you do them one at a time?
Start by putting lead 1 back on, then go clockwise around the distributor following the firing order (1-5-3-6-2-4). For ED i think 1 is the short lead and 6 is the long - should be pretty obvious anyway.

There should be a raised section down the side of the distributor cap showing number 1. It is above the TFI module.

Just a question. Whats the easiest way ppl have found to change leads in an EF / EL? The dizzy/coil area is a b**ch to get at. Every time I look at it I think I'll need it on a hoist or something. I definitely can't reach form the top.

Remove the airbox, burn your arm.
Remove one lead, re-route new lead. Pop it on with a rod through the manifold (i use a long socket extension) shouldn't take more than 25 mins.

I've got a much quicker method and i can change them in about half the time.
First do it cold. Pull air box out. Disconnect the dizzy cap from the dizzy. Push dizzy cap and leads through towards th coil. Pull dizzy rotor button out. Pull leads and cap out. change leads over and reverse order of removal. Done. 12 minutes and without buring myself.

did you say you took the engine out? and the manifold off?
does the dist cap have numbers on it? the plugs are numbered 1-6 in the head from front to rear. if the cap is numbered, the engine out, manifold off would be a 2 seconf job

Firing order
1 - 5 - 3 -6 - 2 - 4 "1" should be marked. Go clockwise around the cap and the corosponding lead should go to that spot. i.e. put no. 1 lead on number one. Then no. 5 lead on the next point. And so on.

Isn't the shortest one number 2???? I'm thinking the ED has the older style manifold. 1 and 3 are the same length then 6 is the longest. I've always found that if you put the cap back on, put the front clip on, then slide under the car and put the rear clip on. Then hook the coil lead up.
Like I said I am working on the older manifold as I haven't dealt with the BBM.

when doing it with a BBM do it from under the car. with the ef's anyway, you can go in from near the starter motor and simply do one at a time.
