problem solved, turns out there is a wire that runs from the crt lamp fuse to the radio then to the BEM, so after hours of f**k a*** about it was just a case of joining the two wires  .

interior lighs where all working and the CRT fuse was fine, it was the wire from the crt lamp fuse to the BEM that runs via the radio, the radio plug had been snipped off breaking the circuit also the guy had cut all the radio wires and shorting the BEM killing the varable dimmer function, the car is in peices going to take a week to put back together. :)

gee thats bizare....so if you unplug the radio the car wont start, cant be.....unless the wires were cut too far back where it tee'd of the wire leading to the bem...

how the hell did u locate that as the problem?

My mate has an XF, he says it has smart lock or something. I think it might be a Ghia. Anyway someone played around with the stereo and now the car will not start. Can this be the same problem as the above?

at a guess i think that the wire for the fuse panel and BEM must be in joined on the same pin in the radio plug. the only reason i found it was because i changed BEM, ECU, smartlock module, dissy, every fuse, all relevent relays and the only thing that was left was the cut radio wires, after i tracked down a radio wiring diagram from here i noticed that there was only one green wire with a yellow trace but i had two in the car, nothing to loose so i took a punt and joined em, away she went.

not sure about that mate but i know thay run a engine fuse in the fuse panel, i would check all the fuses, a mate has a xf that the indicators didnt work and the alt light was on ended up being the fuse for the instrument cluster was blown, strange things car electricals.
