Spend $50 and by a gregorys manual! seriously its a handy thing to have and it shows how to line up the timing system.

Seriously ive got the crank at top dead center and the rotor in the dizzy is pointing to number one.................where do i go from here? Luck you did that then............have you got a w/shop manual for it??? It will show you where to set up the cam sprocket. On the sprocket is a mark, this mark needs to sit about 3 degrees above the cyl head on the pass side of the engine. When you do get it back together, turn the engine over by hand and see if it rotates easily without it coming to a complete stop all of a sudden. Anyway, get a w/shop manual, and read it till you fully understand it, ok.?

You mean sudden stop as in valves hitting the piston? turn the engine by hand with the spark plugs out so as there is no compression.

Here's a pic of that O'ring on the front of the block.

Dont forget to fish the lower chain dampener out of the sump once you've removed the timing cover... Unless your dropping the sump that is.

Anyways i replaced the timing chain kit yesterday. Found out that the dizzy sprocket was out 1 tooth from new. That would explain why it was so hard to set the base timing. The "O" ring in above pics is for the oil send to the chain tensioner. Be careful not to loose the small piston thing that fits in the centre of the "O" ring. Well its all back together now and all good. Drives alot quieter mainly due to the correct timing along with new quides as the old ones caused it to whistle when hot.

Yeah i should have! I had to find out the hard way that the lower chain guide can fall into the sump, i couldnt find it so there it stays! The hard part was getting the cover back on as the head makes it a tight fit when fitting the lower locating dowels. Also when lining up the sprokets be sure to keep tension on the chain from the right side from the crank sprocket up to the cam sprocket as it will give you a false alignment if tesioned on the left.

did you rip the timing cover off to do it or just connect the 2 chains together and run the new one by turning the motor by hand and feeding the chain through?

The cover had to be removed to replace the guides, chain and crank seal.
