cheers for all the above advice... the nay questions are due to my clutch starting to get shagged so what better time than to upgrade gear boxes to an au t5.. ive got the ea T5 only because it was the only t5 available at the time and i needed the car the following day for a road trip to queensland over the "new year break"

Do some measuring before swapping E series T5's with AU's and later: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43274.
Crunching reverse, as mentioned, but you can select any forward gear first, then select reverse - what this does is slow the countergear down. Take your time selecting reverse, not too quick. Crunching between gear changes, try 'double shuffling'.
