check your engine mounts. had the same problem in my dads BA at 110,000kms. car had a vibration/knocking sound coming from the front.

finally got around to changing the oil and it's made a big improvement. No more knocking on startup. The filter it had was the right one so that wasn't the problem. The oil it had in it was going brown...
So that must have been it. The oil had had it.

As for the vibration, in town we got it up on a hoist and started belting the heat shields and one of them moved. One bracket fixed that too, so everything is sweet now except the rattle in the front on small bumps which should be fixed when I finally get around to putting in the nolathane bushes on the torsion bar.

I'm just glad my exhaust rattle and engine knocking has gone.

my mounts have come loose twice .
