EA box will fit you ED, they have the shortest 1st gear of all the e-series T5's, and they have NO reverse brake or syncro. EBII onward boxes are claimed to be a lot stronger and more reliable. Saying that there is nothing wrong with a good condition EA T5.

ar k i see, so i'd probably be best off trying to get a EB11 onwards T5, is the first gear to short? like ridiculously short or not too bad? i can get everything i need for a conversion for 750, but its an EA T5

as above.
Newer ones are generally stronger cos of the Age. Also they use different bearings. (world class boxes) EB2+ have a 3.25:1 ratio first. EA - EB1 have 3.5:1

at 750, I'd be fishing for a EB2 type.
But if thats a complete kit, I wouldn't really bother hunting, Of course. go for lower K's if you can. Any T5 will break if miss-treated. Mother them and they'll treat you right. Thrash it, and you'll be replacing it. Needless to say, many people on here give both types a flogging, and they can stand up very well. they're not as WEAK some people claim. Keep the fluids up, use quality oil, and don't go dropping the clutch at 5k and it'll be reliable. Even if you do bust it.... it only takes 45mins to change them.
