Hey.
Recently, my car died and I replaced the TFI module in my car. Pulled the dizzy out to unscrew the module and put the new one on. However, when I tried to put the dizzy back in, it won't go in. The notch in the crankshaft pulley is lined up with the NDC mark on the block, but it won't slide all the way in when I try to put it back in. My car is dead outside my house and it's really starting to become a problem. I need help fast!

you need to turn the oil pump gear a bit, use a small extension (dont drop it)
its a hex spline (look on the end of dissy shaft) a slight turn will allign it or bang the bastard in!

Otherwise, use a socket and bar, and rotate the harmonic balancer clockwise, then anticlockwise, with the dizzy sitting in the hole - you should find it will drop in the rest of the way.
Then align the balancer marks and make sure the dizzy and rotor marks line up. Oh, and of course, ensure you haven't set up the dizzy 180 degrees out. . .

My uncle said when he was young and living in the US, he had his distributor on 180 degrees out on his mustang and fire shot out of the engine, not sure if its true or not though.

wouldnt have shot out the engine woulda been out the carb as when we put a 350 chev into a cruiser the idiots that built the motor put the dizzy 180 out and upon start up it blew flames out the carb

I usually use an 8 mm socket and extension and turn the oil pump drive, it only needs a slight nudge and she'll drop in... Can go the other way but it's a bit of a pain lining it up spot on.
As for the flames, they certainly can shoot out the carb. I finished a rebuild once and had my mate there with a jar of petrol pouring it down the carb, i spun the engine over and the dizzy was slightly retarded, she backfired through the carb and his hand was close to it, next thing the jar and his hand were on fire, he threw the jar and it landed on his 6x4 trailer, of course the fuel spread and the whole side of the trailer was on fire. He went into panic mode while i stood there laughing my a*** off. |
