Any one replaced the powersteering rack in an eb falcon or any e- seires how is done? is just a case of undoing the balljoints and undoing bolts and sliding it out?? i only ask this cause i fear my rack is f**k. i replaced the switch that was leaking days before i didn't have the right tools so i undid the steering cloumn shaft near the pinion and the power steer lines and replaced the switch.... now the steering is some what heavy and i can move the steering wheel slitghty (car off) and the area near the shaft clunks left and right.... hav i let air in? will this pass give or take a few trips? or yeah have i f**k the rack?
will an rack out of a EF/EL i6 work or is it best to stick to an EA/EB?ED rack in good condition. oh is the xr6 a better rack or not

steering rack is an easy change, provided you have the right tools. done it on my ed not to long ago on the ground so its no difficult task.
as for your clunk dont go jumping to conclusions that your rack is buggered. jack the car up and put it on safty stands. slide in underneath and have someone turn the steering lock to lock and watch/listen for this clunk. chances are you have just left a bolt or two undone.

i might check my bolts later and see.... but i am thinking the switch i got is dodgey cause the steering wheel is heavy but not as heavy as a busted belt etc etc

The power steering presure switch does not have anything to do with how heavy the steering is, it is only there to boost idle speed to prevent engine stall when parking. Last edited by luthor on Sun Apr 29, 2007 10:11 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

If the clunk sound is right at full lock either sides, then its just the pinion "joiner" slipping coz you havnt done it tight enough.
Also, the switch can effect the steering as it tells the ECU how much idle it requires to hold the pressure. If the switch tells to idle lower than it needs, then your steering will get heavier as there is not enough pressure. Be like steering in the old days...... Anyways, if you've let air in, then the pump will suck that to top of cannister. If you have oil in either of your boots on the rack, then your seals have shot through and you require replacing. Keep to an EB rack, as most EA's have 12mm tie rods, plus diff splines. Whereas the EB rack has 14mm tie rods and the right pinion spline for your column. Nothing special about the xr6 racks, as you still gotta turn them the same amount of times for full lock. If you want a reco rack, let us know, I sell them for $180 outright.
