Just in case anyone is interested, it is possible to anodise alluminium bits at home. Here is a website that is very useful on the subject, http://astro.neutral.org/anodise5.shtml
I tried it with a few bits and pieces using a battery charger and colouring with "queen" food dye and got good results.
It is limited to small parts tho.
