just a quick question what does the knock sensor do and what is it for

Its a piezoelectric element (much like a microphone) and detects vibration and or bumps.
(simular to what you find in the back of a battery watch, that white patch that emits sound) It listens for detonation (pinging/pinking ) and tells the ECU to retard the timing in steps if theres any evidence.

Yeh had two replace mine in the Xr6 6 months or so back was like $200 sumthin bucks incl labour etc
