I was gonna post this in the WADE section, but thought it would get more visuals in here..
Chris and anyone else who has my exact engine, I pick up my EA S tomorrow with a brand new head. I asked the workshop to install my new 1636 cam at the same time, and although hesitant, he said he'd do it at no extra charge seeing as tho the stocker has to come out anyway. I told them another set of the same shims that were in there was all that was required. I spoke to them today, and the car's just about ready, all back together, and he's just testing it, I can have it back tomorrow. He said he didn't install the cam for reasons that if it doesn't work, or run right it will void my warranty - this wasn't my worry. He said after speaking to FORD they said it's not as simple as another set and away we go.. refered to the shims / rocker gear or something have got to be measured and everything has to be exact, I just wish he called you guys instead of FORD. I'm not angry at the dude, I just feel like a dissapointed young fella - he's just playing it safe. He's done heaps of these motors, but all standard spec, as he's done 100's of Taxi's. I said 100's of fella's have installed this profile, and just another set of 1.9mm shims of the same diametre and it's sweet, but he didn't want to risk it.. Can anyone help recommend a place in ACT or any sensible advice how I can get this baby in my EA.. Cheers team.. |

you may not think this is sensible but may i suggest doing it your self. Like its not really that hard or complicated and with the forums here to ask for help and the doco it wont be that hard.
Tips Just take your time. If something doesnt look right then find out why and fix it. Even if something takes an hour to redo...DO IT. its not worth f**k up. Just take it easy.

^ I kno dude, and cheers. I am tempted. But haven't done something as specific as this before. I mean I am good with precision assembly was a tech for 4 years, and did a lot of non-engine work on previous cars..
hehe, it's just that it's the ticker in my new car would rather take it somewhere, or get some assistance.. I'll read through the articles again I guess. |

Trust me, do the cam yourself, there is a write up on how to do it and i guarantee you will take more care in doing it than someone who only thinks about getting paid.
I remember when i had my cam installed by a mechanic and he rang me and kept stalling that it wasnt finished cause they lost a shim and whinged how they didnt look right shimmed up, so i picked the car up, drove it home ticking away, pulled off the cover and shimmed the fukin thing up myself.... first time i ever seen the inside of a fukin motor and did a better job than the so called mechanic. It was only till the headgasket was done recently that i found they mustve skipped a tooth on the chain and had me driving around with the timing out... f**k!! Basically im trying to say is, read up on it carefully, pull the cover off, rocker gear off and your halfway there, and youll learn a bit while your at it |

LOL I'm grinning at myself, I mean all mates are so surprised I'm not doing it - I mean I'm the most mechanically minded out of em down here. I just being a scardie cat cause I have spent a bit of cash on this car in only a month of owning it. It owes me $3700 already!
However.. after reading this thread, and this http://www.fordmods.com/forums/documents.php?doc=59 I'm beggining to think I'll end up doing it but only with some experienced assistance. Perhaps I'll do it after a cruise if we can organise one here in ACT, and maybe after my exhaust is done.. What do you's reckon? |

Yeah I'm gonna do it, FordFairmont sent us a really good article with good pics, including some tech pics with the arm + tappet assembly dismantled to clearly show where the shims sit.
Until then I had no idea where in relation to the arms the shims fitted. I reckon we start something in the cruise thread.. C'mon Canberra! |
