Looking at converting the EL XR to HIDs. Anyone got HIDs in their high beams? Is it OK to use them for high beam? I have heard that they are not good to turn on and off quickly so possibly bad to use them as high beam lights.

I run them as low and high beam, there is a fair delay until they fully warm up etc, going between high and low is quick if high beam bulb hasn't had time to cool down, but I wouldn't really recommend it.
I would prefer myself to get HID that switch between high/low by moving the bulb, I do not remember, does the low side in XR lights have high/low or just low, are they H4? You wouldn't have the delay with this setup or the chance of failing to restart, which can happen, I have a faulty low beam bulb with this problem.

So they're not good for high beam then. The XRs have separate low and high lights.

I ran HID's Hi and Low in my XR. Works a treat. Takes 3-5 seconds to get them to full power, but its not an issue.
People who travel slow in the right lane move VERY fast (once the high beams power up! lol)

the low beam hids are rated at 35w, do you use the same rating for the globes for the high beams?

I have 8000K H4 Low/Hi HID in my BA with blue LED parkers and standard high-beam globes.
Takes a few seconds to warm up but great to use. I did look at HID high-beam but I have ran out of room under the bonnet to put another 3 HID boxes to drive them!

Yes. The only difference between low and high beam is the focusing. I've heard of 55W HIDs, but never seen any for sale. In my EL and the BF, I kept regular bulbs in the highs, allows you to flash people without worry. The BF has a moving H4 bulb for the lows and highs, and the seperate highs are just halogens.

I was actually going to be ordering my HIDs this week but on the weekend my whole car got stone chips (every panel) and I now need a whole respray so they will have to wait. I have seen the 55W HIDs for sale on ebay but I think I will buy them from an actual Australian store. The brand I am looking at are GEXenon (general electric).
