you are best off going the pod, they are suck more air. you just have to do it right, get as much cold air to it as possible, this may mean you have to build a new air box to shield it from hot air than run your pipe down behind you front bar. Another way is to get a custom pipe made up cut a hole in your engine bay and put the pod behind your front bar, both options work well.
I have mine in the engine bay, and it still does a good job. put it this way any upgrade from the standard airbox will see results.

Both will be better then the standard filter so what ever is up to you, when i got my K&N panel and the snorkle it felt more alive and had better response. Also im going to cut a hole in the bottom of the box and put a 3 inch pipe down to the ground with a sock or somthing over it to stop water from getting in, hopefully i get even better air flow again.

i ran a 14.8 at 93mph with a panel filter on my XR6. if your car is slower then that i realy don't see how having more filter flow is going to help.
the gap between the bonnet and top radiator support is bigger restriction to power then the filter. and having one open in the engine bay is worse again

even a $12 paper ryco filter has enough flow for more power then most people on here are making.
