Got a mate that's a metal head ... and he listened to some of his music in my ute ... and I run two 12" JL Audios behind the seats .... he said the bass was awesome ... but couldn't keep up with the music itself.

Now I thought my 12"s were pretty quick when it come to bass response and punchiness ... but when it comes to hard and fast metal tracks ... they really couldn't keep up.

I suggest an array of 10s if you play a lot of metal music.

For the rest though ... 12"s will be fine.

a 12" in a sealed box thats relatively small for the sub will suit you best. Make sure you feed it plenty of power though.

something with high sensitivity, run it at 4ohms and use an amp with high damping factor.

Focal are very good. Fairly pricey but extremely good quality. Surprised you havent heard of them. I'd put them up there with RF stuff.

no sorry, i have heard of focal....im getting some focal splits atm lol, i just hadn't heard their subs playing until the other day and when i heard them was like faaaark...its just weird i haven't seen them widely used (although i suppose weird sizing would rule them out for those not making their own box).

i rate their speakers highly (a little more than rockfords)....rockfords go awesome in my mates car playing techno and rap but i think for all round music the focals sounded better (like you said they are killing my bank account though  )

It depends what you're after, if you want good sound quality Focal makes Rockford sound pretty bad. If you just want loud bass and don't care how good it sounds, then Rockford would be the better choice.

Focal is a few steps above RF :)
