Yeah they have to go through compliance.
New seatbelts, new wipers, side intrusion bars fitted, child seat anchor point if its registered as a 5 seater and of course a general roadworthy check. Some other little niggly bits too depending on the model. They then get a new VIN and a green compliance plate.

Cause the car has to be in dead stock condition during inspection as part of the compliance process. So many people have been caught out like that its not funny.

I thought the compliancing was always into the thousands. But you buy the cars dirt cheap and still save a bit of $$$.

Funny thing is. Second hand complied jap cars are almost always cheaper than the locally delivered versions.

At least you have a chance of chasing a locally delivered versions history. Thatd be the main reason for extra cost in my opinion. I'd rather a car that I can see the service history then one where some crazy japanese dude used it to deliver tofu.

If I was in the market for an import I"d be throwing big money at it anyway. who cares if the mechanicals are shagged. As long as the cops aren't gunna come knocking on my door cause of our tofu friend then its all good.

Go abnd have a look on the Autospeed website, one of the current articles they have imported a soft top version of the Toyota Paceo, and they outline with pictures it getting compliance. Good read. You probably will need membership to read it or the google trick.
