My EF XR6 wagon has been intermittently refusing to start. Replacing the inhibitor switch did nothing. So I tried thumping the dash panel over the BCM (by left knee) while turning the key, as suggested in a Fordmods post, and it starts every time! My thanks to the contributor of that gem.

So, it's a BCM problem. I have unplugged and re-inserted the connectors, wiggled the connectors, to check for a bad external connection, but makes no difference. It's probably inside the BCM.

I bought a another BCM from the wrecker. It is a red one, even though the faulty one is blue - the Ford parts guy says all Tickfords had red BCMs. I installed it and tried to get it to re-learn the key by pressing the demister button 3 times, and by turning the key 'on' and waiting 30 minutes, but the locks did not cycle. What do I need to do to get the new BCM to learn the key?

XR's mostly had Blue bem's, I've only come across 1 or 2 red ones in an EF.

As you've done the following:
try it again!

You need to program the ignition barrel.

Turn the key fully on (do not crank).
Watch the smartlock Jewel flash fast.
Wait 45mins, the door locks should cycle. (maybe 1hr with red bem's)
If programmed successful, the Smartlock Jewel WILL be steady.
IF so, *DIRECTLY CRANK*. DO NOT turn off then crank.

Run engine for a few minutes to recharge the 45mins of the ignition being on and enjoy your new tapless starting!

If the red BCMs aren't normally found in EFs, where are they used? EL XRs? Will that make a difference (eg, EF coil pack vs EL dizzy)? Should I go back to a blue BCM?

You are probably right about the longer wait for the red BCM. Will try again on the weekend.

Thanks.

sometimes it can take 5 or six tries to get the remote progamming mode to activate.
the red BCM is from a fairmont.
