I want to put an auto tranny from a 94 EF Futura
into a 96 EF GLI
The 96 EF does not seem to have a kick down cable off the throttle body!
The 94 model definately has one!
Can this be done?
What problems do I face? :?: :idea: :?: :idea: :?: :idea:

straight swap.
theres no kickdown, that'll be the cruise cable.

Just be carefull with the little things,
MAP sensor (black box on firewall) vacuum pipe may fall off during operation and have you stumped with thick exhaust smoke!

Also the 94' may have a tranny cooler and slightly different 'forward' plumbing.

And may also gain a dipstick (you prolly have one on the 96' also) however they were phased out late 96'

Dipstick would be a bonus! Rang a few tranny places today for quotes on getting one installed, and most won't touch it with a 10ft pole! Of the few that said they'd do it, looking at $500 plus.

dont blame them....they put in an untested trans, then it runs like s**t, customer wont pay - they wasted their time..

whose post is this tho eskimo or private9?

pretty much the Auto Boxes are the same for all e series anything that appears to be different is a straight swap over

6 - 8 is the only difference

OHHH Anton you are so uninformed!
The first series of BTR 4sp Auto were a LEMON. weak internals + BIg$$$ rebuild/ changeover.
Never use anything older than an EF Box. I personally know of several people including myself that had earlier boxes hernia at around 150,000-200,000 klm. Mine was a late(94) ED and it was dealer serviced and not thrashed.
My EF has done 350,000klm (touch wood) so far no worries. The main thing is to use the right oil and keep them cool as when the trans fluid overheats it loses it's ability to protect the box. So we all recommend a trans cooler be fitted esp if towing.

Nah dont have a dipstick on the 96er but do have one on the 94!
Will this cause a problem? :?: :? :? :?:

I think you are talking about the 85LE transmissions which did have problems, 91LE's etc. are O.K. My ED has done 375,000 on the original gearbox and is still running strong.

They are a straight swap. V8 autos r different from the 6's most parts are interchangable except some pumps, e.g. early pumps cannot go into au's ba's etc. XR6 turbos also run the Au XR8 auto. 91 - 95 are different as they hav band adjustment screws on them, au n ba bells housings r different.
