It connects to the inner latch assembly, but I don't remember where to, might be the same place just below the attatchment for the lock knobs spot.

I've broken a few door handles in my old ZL, but i found a trick that seems to work well.
The reason why the doors handles seem to break is because the rod that connects the door handle to the mechanism can bend, therefore the handle needs to be lifted higher to open the door, and repeatedly doing this eventually snaps the door handle. You can try a straighten it, but it is easier if you cut this rod and extend it with a spare central locking rod and two block joiners that come with the central locking kits. Therefore the handle doesn't have to be lifted as high to get the door to open. And the genuine ford handles last longer than any aftermarket handle i have tried. Hope this helps. Nathan |

I have always fund the chrome handle lasted much longer then the black handles on my XD's and F's but the prob was i had to paint the chrome one's black!.
I think your central door locking actuator connects to the hole located near the actual mechanism if its factory or if its a aftermarket system it probably connects near the actual locking knob from the inside of the car, I'm looking to go back into an X series, you have just reminded me of all the pains in the rear those handles used to give me haha. good luck.

we have had an XE from brand new, and in my lifetime we have had to replace the handles many times. wen i was about 10 dad taught me how to change the handles coz he was so bloody sick of changing them too! just be patient and persevere...although its a pain to change them, if you just keep persevering you will be ready for the next handle to break

while im repairing all the handles, im also replacing the door hinge pins and bushes too - found a couple of cheapies on good old ebay that i will eventually get around to putting into the car.
im hoping that all this will help prevent future door handle breakages. im going to look into using tougher / thicker rods for the handle rods to again help prevent future breakages. cheers

Been there, done that!
I have had to replace handles where the pivot for the lever and spring has gone, and tapping and fitting a screw doesn't always work wither, one I replaced had that already done to it but the bloody screw kept winding out and the handle would cease to function. Even loctite didn't keep it in!! Also I have had the piece where the actual handle pivots break off. I have also had the little tang on the handle snap off. I don't bother with secondhand ones, as they are likely to break again. I just get new ones for around $15 each. Are the plastic pivots for the interior handle available new? I have to fix one on a XE soon.

Just found this thread,
I broke about 4 Driver's side door handles in 18 months, then found out all the dust and grease in cog mechanism that holds the door closed was putting extra stain on the whole workings. Breaking the weak link-The door handle. I undid the three screws holding the cog plate to the end of the door and cleaned the whole lot in petrol with a brush. Not a problem since(over 18 months now).The opening is really smooth now,The 23 years of WA dust buildup was my big problem.(1983 XE wagon) Hope this may work for some others....Save some Time!! lonfa |

i also found another little 'treasure' of info on these bloody door handles - if all the striker plates and everything are kept greased up and correctly aligned, then they dont break as much / often / ever..

ive had my car for 2years ands ive only just broke my second door handel. its really not that bad..1 door handel every year..i can deal with that..no bigie

lol i broke one of mine .. after buying a replacement from a wreckers i thewt .. yeh this will be easy .. well i broke it .. after a hour of throwing the broken door handle round the back yard and swearing my gily said "repco sell them for $10"
so i guess the moral of the story is dont buy second hand stuff .. and also dont leave it lying in the backyard like i did .. cos i hit it with the lawnmower ..and i had to replace the front window on the car aswell

so i guess the moral of the story is dont buy second hand stuff .. and also dont leave it lying in the backyard like i did .. cos i hit it with the lawnmower ..and i had to replace the front window on the car aswell ahahah! thats funny - bad luck on that one. would have been cheaper to have brought the real deal newies than run over a broken / 2nd hand one and breaking the car window. update on my progress: the LTD is sitting in the yard.... under a $30 car cover.... yeah i know cheap and nasty - but the cover isnt to protect the car from dirt and water, just to stop people being able to see it (all they see is this blue thing drapped over a big car! not in-conspicuos im sure!) we repaired the inner doorhandle working now, so at least we can still get the door open from the inside when needed...

I've seen a XF ute with the rear door handles off a EA falcon on it. don't know how much work is involved in doing this tho

Yes I've seen EF handles on a XF too...I sure its not too hard just a case of having them mounted.
I've broken so many handles its rediculous, yes it comes back to not having the door adjusted correctly and the mechanism being clogged up. I've bought new hinges and they made a HUGE difference! Except they are $70 EACH! Mine used to break on the rivet thingy that holds the pivot in place of the door. For a quick fix, put a tapered metal drill bit in and hit with a hammer. Gives you a little more use out of them!
