I'm a relative newbie to this forum and seeking the advice of some wiser heads.
I have just bought a 1994 Fairmont Ghia with 200,000 on the clock. Following advice from this forum I changed the thermostat and the coolant was absoutely rotten. So judging by the crap in the coolant, it doesn't look like the fairmont has been looked after for a while. which leads me to my question: What sort of things should I service/change/replace as matter of course when buying a car this old? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

For a new car, with unknown maintenance history, my list would be:
Replace the following: coolant thermostat engine oil & filter transmission service & full oil full flush (assuming it's an auto) diff oil airfilter brake fluid Check & inspect the following: brake pads serpentine belt head gasket (look for coolant seepage near exhaust manifold, or down the rear, mine was blown with no water in the oil, just seepage to outside) sparkplugs sparkplug leads power steer fluid

Check the bearings in the idler pulleys. I know in the EBII's and the ED's the idler pulley bearings seize up over time resulting in a chewed up power steering belt and ALOT of squealing.

first thing to do is take the radiator to a Radiator mob, ADRAD etc, to get it profesionally cleaned, especially seeing as the cooloing system hasnt been looked after.

Did you flush the radiator before adding new coolant?
Mixing coolants can create a congealed sludge in the radiator. Grumbles.
