I've never been in an ED (sorry....) but I think a good 'rule o thumb'... if the LCD screen is usually black and then the digits are illuminated colour, then it uses the same "filter" system (as opposed to a light LCD screen with digits which are 'blacked out'). And you should be able to change the colour.

I stripped a broken climate control unit just to see how it worked and found a piece of orange plastic filter in there and it just slides into it's slot easily enough. All you have to do is figure out what color you want to change it to and then try different pieces of filter with the CC unit only connected to the dash by its wires and see how it looks in the dark.
Piece of piss.

i did the conversion but the blue went aqua and didnt really let a lot of light through am i doing something wrong? Like do i need a different type of paper or a different colour?

Double up the filter paper to darken the color or but thicker filter upfront.

Try thinner paper/darker blue. Soaked mine in WD40 to achieve this.
