You can on many occasions just change the carrier without issues.
However there can some complications with shiming. I've changed quite a few centres and never needed to shim them up. general rule, use the shims with the uniform housing *unless changing gears* However I have never had any major issues.

or should i take it to pro and pay to have it done Pro is better of course! If you do it yourself, you risk damaging your a***/bearings etc. If your confident try it and save yaself 500bux. however if you make a mistake, it could cost you more! In order to do it you must: Remove wheels. Remove calipers/support bracket. Remove rotors. Remove abs sensor (if applicable). Drain oil. Remove axles. Remove watts link (sedan). Remove diff hat (cover). Undo the hemisphere. Lever it out *May need to spread the diff* (i've never needed to). Remove gears (LH thread). Refit to LSD carrier. Install LSD carrier with its own bearings (or new) with the non lsd shims. Torque up caps. (bah) Refit all the rest. Add LSX 90 (cheap oil to start off with). Bon Appitite! Can be done in the car in about 1hr. You'll also need RTV blue sealant. May need a vice to remove the gear bolts or a rattle gun. Your own Risk!

Theres some pics here to compare
http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... hlight=lsd Im unsure what the diff on the bottom is out of tho. The red internal enamel is there to aid the oil flow and cleanliness. It seals the pores in the cast. I do have pics somewhere of most stages, but prolly not good enough for a doco. :(
