Well, it feels like my car ED with bbm conversion, has a miss, not always but under a bit of load and under full throttle, feels slow!!
I checked and adjusted timing (put ECU in diagnostic mode, and as soon as the engine revs drop form about 1400 to idle speed 700 or so rpm and adjust till it lines up on the IGN mark on timing cover) but when I put the induction timing light on to number 1 lead the light flashed like so; "I" means light on, "-" means light off; I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I When on numbers 2 and 3 it went sort of like this; I-I-II-I-I-I---I-I-I-II-I-I--I-I--I Not very even, and I think a reason for my problems. Would would be causing this. The rotor button and cap are 6 months old, coil checked for cracks, and there are none, leads about a year or two old, and plugs about 12 months old. Any body have a clue why it would be doing this?? Got me stumped. Cheers, Mark |

Hi
I dont know a lot about it .. but i've recently been playing with timing and spark/ leads/ rotor. Perhaps.. it the Idle Control Sensor? Someone here or over at AFF mentioned , soaking it in WD40 off the car, made a huge improvement to his timing. I of course could be very wrong. But i am in the learning curve.

Sounds like the TFI module is on it's way out.

are you sure its not just your timing light thats playing up? being distributor based, its not likely that its only doing it on a couple cylinders

I'd say you are setting the ignition timing wrong for starters.
You are using an EL ECU, correct? IF not, disregard. You have to wait until the engine is in base timing mode before changing timing. It is not straight after the engine drops to idle after its RPM test. After it spits out all the codes, you still see the engine stutter and almost stall. It will pick itself back and idle low and crappy. This is base idle/timing mode, and this is when you alter the timing. Not anytime before. And it only lasts 2 minutes, so get moving. Secondly, EL ECU's run base timing at TDC. So when the engine is in base timing mode, align the balancer mark with the TDC, not the IGN mark. |

arm79, thanks for that, I'll recheck my timing. I wondered why the car did that after the diagnostic, so it'll splutter, then when the revs pick up from that spluttering, then check it. Got it.
Oh and I am using EL ECU. Probably way out the timing, because I obviously adjusted it too early I'll do it again and I'll let you know how it went. Thanks heaps, Mark. |

When it falls into base timing mode, the balancer mark will be fixed. It wont move if you rev the engine. Thats when you can be 100% sure its in the right mode. If the mark moves, then its not ready to adjust.

Hey arm79, thanks heaps for your help. The MAX ELLERY'S book told me incorrectly, but now the car is heaps better. Now when I put timing light on each lead, the spark is even with no misses.
Also, the difference in power is huge. After doing my BBM conversion, obviously my timing was out and the EL ECU is probably more sensitive or whatever to timing than the ED ECU, so was lacking tonnes of power and definately going through the juice (350 km highway driving with cruise!!). I was even going to put log manifold back on!! Now, one week later, I have doe 600 km so far and theres about 1/4 to go, and feels heaps better. Now I know what all you EF EL drivers go on about with the torque difference with BBM! Thank again for you help. Mark. |

HAHA, nah, just do a lot of freeway driving to work, so spends most of it's time at 110 km/h on cruise, but the gauge is funnt, so probably only get about 650 to 700 out of it, which is great, but if I drive it around town plus sticking the boot into it, then yeah, 350-400 is the norm |

You've just gone up a level of respect in my books! |
