I have this EF XR6 motor sitting in the backyard that won't be going into my car for a few months or so and I would like to do put some headwork and a cam into it before I put it in my car. I dont know the first thing about headwork so what should I look for and what gains can I expect? How much will it cost me to take the head to get the work done and reinstall it onto the motor?
Also Im not sure if I should put the head back onto the EF block which has done 190,000kms seemed strong and supposedly recent reco'd or if I should install it onto my EL hybrid block which has done 260,000kms but is supposedly a better motor then the standard ones.

Biggest cam you can get, get the head decked, get the exhaust side cleaned up, id keep it on the 190,000 block.

the head work can get pretty expensive start of at port and polish, then chaambers, throat work thats where its starts to get expensive, get decent valve springs, hardened valves, collets,. With cam and headwork you'll need a chip to i reckon to get the best out of it, big power increase especially with a big cam to use that extra flow from head.
My headwork on my car was 1500, i still have the factory cam in at the moment and down low its worse than before but up top it feels bit better, in desperate need of decent cam. |

Hi Joe, thanks for the reply, what did $1500 get you on that head?
Should I try to find one place to get the head and cam done?

you could look at mock, costs a bit but his gear is proven to work.

Don't be afraid to DIY.
Bought die grinder and porting tools/supplies. Took me a solid 4+ hours. Wasn't hard. search for my post on the SVO....all the info you will need is in there. Additionally i have now completed the job including the head reco and installed the new springs which i had isotropically finished to prevent failure (as is done in V8 supercars).

1500 was mates rates pretty much, my heads been throated out nice angle work on ports, 1 of the vavles is larger i think it was exhaust side from memory, all my valves are hardened, collets, saloon valve springs, had about 5thou taken off it not much mainly just a clean up of the face.
There was quite alot of hours on the die grinder done by my mate hours and hours all at half price. I dont know what it will flow cos it wasnt tested but the head is pretty much ready for turbo application as ive been told. |

i have a couple of pics of the head i have, i can email you them if u want.
It all depends the guy who did my headwork is off ford forums his El i6 runs a 13.7, he'll prbly be putting my cam in to shortly. you can go Jmm but expect to pay heaps like 3k for what ive had done. |

Im not really looking to get a heap of work done. Just some mild stuff. From what I read the EF XR head already flows quite well so is it even worth getting it worked or should I just rebuild the motor and get the head work further down the track?

Take a look at Best Fords, I got this copy a week ago. This info came from Brendan Mock at JMM (Jim Mock Motorsport).

Thats awesome matt, cheers. Im really not confident at all in doing it myself. I would rather pay a bit extra and get it done.
