Out of that article!!!
I wasn't really concerned about it was because this head is going on an EB engine so the pistons are going to be different to an AU anyway. If I'd left the combustion chambers how they were it would have more compression than standard - and this is going to be a (turbo engine)." See just proving what i said mate!! My Au head is different to Eseries so maybe its benficial for a eseries head to have hump removed i dont know, |

Does anyone know if the ED head is marked 91AB?

The swirl ridge is generally removed because it reduces flow, and because its possible for the thin edge of it to get hot enough to possibly cause detonation. It was put in the head casting in the first place to introduce more swirl and tumble in the cylinder which mixes air and fuel better and hence more complete combustion which amongst other things improves lowend power and reduces emissions. The compression and swirl effect you lose from removing the ridge is easily offset by the higher flow you get by removing it. However, if your building an NA motor its easy to more than regain the lost compression via shaving the head.

"The benefits in the flow right through the valve lift range outweigh the small reduction in compression. But if someone wanted more compression I can easily pick it up by skimming the head with the mill anyway. It wouldn't take much to make it up - maybe 10 thou."

That article, or rather the parts of it that were posted, only really mentioned working on the chambers. In reality there is much more work to be done in the bowls, the guide bosses and exhaust side short turns.
here is my attempt at it:
