I recently replaced the rear passenger seat dome lights (the two side ones near the door) with the $30 Jaycar ZD-0485 LED kit. Comes with wedge, bayonet and festoon adapters, but I didn't use any of them, as they wouldn't fit with the adapters.
I also replaced the dodgy 3 way switches with a 3 way toggle. These kits are very bright indeed, and very much worth their money. They don't have the dispersion problems that regular LED's have either. My main interior light is currently a CCFL inside the centre dome (with the double front spotties), but this will change when I buy more of these LED kits.

I did all the lights in my EL with LEDs. Just get a bunch of LED's, resistors to suit, and a soldering iron.
I sourced a 500 pack of wide angle super bright whites off of ebay (significantly cheaper than anywhere in Oz). And they threw in the resistors for 12v operation.

Looks pretty cheap, considering Jaycar charge $3.50 for one of them.
But it comes from hong kong - is it sent on the slow boat? If you can find a better deal with the shipper in Oz you might be on a winner. For $10 you can't really go wrong though - unless its a scam and thats the whole point Make a lot of small profits from ebay fraud and no one will complain! If you drop into Jaycar, they have a display of all their LED's on a powered board, so you can compare their relative brightness.

For the legs - yeah that'll work ok. I've not experimented with using them in the dash, so I don't know what angle you need to put them in etc. You might need to have several coming out of the same bulb pointing in different directions for even spread.
