I have purchased a couple of Explorer manifolds recently - two AU style ones and 2 American Explorers and I have found some subtle differences.
I have what seems to be a very late Explorer (Mugens old one) which has no provision in the upper manifold or lower for the EGR and no boss for the ACT sensor (RF-F87E-9K461-BB part number on lower, RF-XL2E-9425-AB on the upper). Chris had plans of welding a bung on number 5 port which is why it looks like it has been machined down. The other Australian Explorer had no ACT sensor boss on the lower or provisions for EGR in the lower manifold but had the EGR equipped upper. The vaccum pipework was different to the late one (RF-F87E-9K461-BB part number on lower, RF-F77E-9425-AB on the upper) The Early American Explorer I have just imported has the ACT boss on the number 5 port but is not drilled and tapped, and has full EGR through the upper manifold(RF-F87E-9K461-BB part number on lower, RF-F77E-9425-AB on the upper) What this means for E series 5.0 people is that the earlier lower will allow you to run the ACT in the standard place and have the EGR fully functional. If you compile enough of this sort of information I will sticky it for you, anyone object?
If you can, please include pictures. After the last lot of, heads, header etc threads it would be good to add these all together, saves some poor bastard asking the same questions all the time because they searched for the wrong words etc when doing a forum search, I am sure we have all done this.

Hi Shane,
The reasons for these differences are related to Early EECIV Explorers with manifold mounted ACT sensors(later EECV equipped ones use MAF tube mounted ACT sensors). The EGR is external on some Explorers(ala F-series style) too hence nothing in the intake. They also had horrible 90deg throttle body mountings which doubled as the EGR Spacer with external exhaust manifold supply....easy to chuck away for Falcon use of course. I'm not aware of an Aussie delivered 5.0L Explorer...I believe we only got the 4.0L because the 5.0 was a hard squeeze even in left hook versions, until the new generation (and much bigger)Explorer which of course uses the modular 4.6L V8(because it can now fit in the engine bay). Pete. Pete, the early manifold I have got has the boss cast but not drilled and tapped for the ACT sensor. The Australian Explorer manifold I am talking about is the AU manifold. Shane

Hi Shane,
I see what your saying. There is actually an earlier one than the one you have there...it'll have an F4 or F5 prefix with the ACT boss drilled and tapped. Cheers, Pete. |
