This is a bit different to the other threads I have read related to this issue. First of all I have had an intermitent charge light fault that I cant seem to track down. This may or may not be related to my new problem. Secondly I have dual fuel and every time I have been on gas butI tried fuel in the third case, so I don't think it's fuel pump related.
This started off as a total engine cut out @ 110kmh @ night with the tacho dropping to 0rpm despite the engine still turning over for about 2 sec before running normally again. All other power was still there and no warning lights came up. The second time it did this several times for about a km, then ran normally again. Third time it was a total stop, and when I pulled over, the engine cranked and started, but cut out imediately when the ignition key is returned to the run position. About 10 minutes later it started ang ran fine again. The car did about 400km between each fault, but it's clearly getting worse. I'm about to go and get some relays and go over all the connections again. Does anybody out there have any clues???

I don't think the early NA's have smart lock, and no lights come up. It did it twice more today, so I did the self diagnosis, and it came up as 41 on petrol and 12,13 and 41 on gas on the engine run test and no fault on the engine off test. It appears to be a sensor problem, but my gut feeling is it's possibly more ignition switch related (??) although this would probably maen total power loss and that doesn't happen. 11 and 12 relate to ISC solenoid and 41 relates to O2 signal low, coolant temp, air temp and MAP sensors, plus fuel starvation. It starts on both fuels after it fails no problem. Another person mentioned they had a similar problem with a stuffed crank angle sensor. Does anybody know what the tests and values are for all these sensors. Any help grattefully recieved.
Cheers.

when it cuts out does it kick over and not start? or does it do nothing?
check for spark! |

I had an xc wagon that would do the same thing on gas. The lead from the battery to the starter motor had rubbed through the casing. When i hit a bump it would contact the body or motor and cut out the engine.

could be a dying coil

Thanks for the input. If anyone has anymore ideas, I need them. This is getting to be a pain.
eed -250 - The engine cranks and starts, but cuts out imediately when the ignition key is returned to the run position. After a while it starts and runs fine. xbcoupe351 - It does this on both fuels, the only difference seems to be the fault codes in the engine run test. fiftyone - I'm thinking ignition, but I don't know if a coil would cause the tacho to die at the same time. It also doesn't explain the cranking starting, not running issue.

could be the terminal plate on the ignition barrel.

The tacho gets it signal from the coil. It could also be the TFI module on the dizzy playing up

Just couldn't wait for something to turn up in the mail. Anyway I put it in yesterday and it goes, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I got a good one and that it's solved the problem. The one I took out had a couple of tight spots when I turned it by hand. What a p#%*k of a job changing the coil is. Whoever thought of hiding them there deserves death or worse. The charge lights still coming on and I'll get a voltage regulator today and see if that fixes it.

It's fixed! I reckon it was the TFI unit for the cut out problem and the regulator for the charge light. To all those that put their two bob's worth in, thanks.
