Hey guys.
just bought an EF Fairlane 96 5L V8 model. thought it was just a smooth shifter (never owned an auto car before) but after a trip to victoria where it saton 3200rpm at 110kph i thought that was a little odd and the fact it has little/no balls off the line also got me thinking. I know its a pretty stupid thing but i havent owned an auto or driven many before. What could be causing this? it must be holding 2nd i think due to high revs at speed. Even if i move it through the gears using the stick nothing changes. 1-2-3-D all the same. Pretty cut that i bought it and didnt pick up on this but what can you do? any help seriously appreciated guys. thanks

try the inhibitor switch on the side of the tranny.

Another cause to the problem could be low transmission oil.
I know when this happened in my car the gearbox would get hot and would instantly lock into limp-home mode. A couple of days later the gearbox splattered its guts all over the road haha |

Cold or warm, low fluid will still affect it. Nine times out of ten it's either low transmission fluid or as Bowsaw mentioned, the inhibitor switch which is located on the passengers side of the gearbox which has a white case and a plug in the top of it. From what i have read it's reasonably easy to replace, but can be quite expensive especially if bought from Ford Spare Parts.

So you'd recomend ford tell me whats wrong with it and pending how much theyre going to charge for a new part (if it is the inhibitor switch) to source an aftermarket, like bosche one or something and fit it myself? I should be able to manage that
Fingers crossed its just fluid though

No worries man, glad to know it all worked out for you in the end. Which fuse exactly did Ford replace? And what was done in the 200,000km service?

Not sure exactly which fuse. doesnt say in the report.
I had the ABS and AIRBAG light on the dash up and they traced them back to a blown fuse. reset the ecu and they went away. Just a normal 200k major service. plugs, all filters etc. weird ay. Its a good feeling though being able to put the foot down at a set of lights or whatever and itll actually take off rather then ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm OK go. Im getting the tranny serviced on monday anyway as a precaution.
