My brother has cracked open the diff housing on his AU and there's no fluid left.. is the car ok to drive to a workshop or bad idea?

Bad idea if the diff is still repairable.

He already drove it home like that, apparently its clunking quite badly. I'm not really game to drive the car myself, it's got a few other bits smashed up on it (he hit a curb)

Forgetting about the torture to the diff, I wouldn't drive it because of the safety issues - what if the diff welds itself up, or breaks something and locks up on you. Tow truck all the way for this one.

Diff is about the only component that wont survive without oil. Even driving the car in the driveway without having any oil in it, new diff, can stuff it.
Simple answer No diff oil, No move!

Haha, an engine will seize pretty damn quickly without oil.

Have seen engines running for years as irrigation pumps with water as lubricant.
Drive a vehicle 10 feet with no oil, or with engine/gearbox oil in the diff, and you've probably stuffed the diff. Is that a better explanation? Grumbles

Just for interests sake the car did end up being driven. It's going to be replaced anyway, the whole lot is stuffed.
