I'd get some quotes from engine reconditioning places 1st. I rebuilt mine and by the time I got the machining work done and drove back and forward to pick up stuff from them, I don't think it would have been much dearer to just buy an exchange engine or get mine rebuilt by them.

The DIY job cost me around $2,000 including machining and parts with a 1mm oversize. I guess there are advantages in DIY because you know what's going into the engine. It ended up being a lot of mucking around though.

If you don't need to go oversize, you might be able to get away with honing the cylinders, new rings and bearings and a timing chain. I basically replaced everything while I had the engine out so I didn't have to muck around with it later on.

Might come down to what you think your time is worth.

I reckon it would be great to rebuild an engine myself, but the only problem is time and logistics.

If I had the time, space, tools and contacts I would rebuild. That way you know what is going into the engine and the satisfaction at the end would be great.

Not up on metric overbores but in thou it used to go up in 20 thou increments, where 40 thou is equal to a mil.

1mm seems a bit of a jump for first rebore but I guess that keeps kit price down.

There are many steps to rebuilding an engine and o lot of tools that you need to beg, borrow or buy to achieve top results.

The crankshaft needs to be checked and if necessary reground, which will require UNDERSIZE bearings of the correct size.

The conrods need checking for ovality and the list goes on.

AU engines are available off ebay with modified sumps to allow them to fit into "E" Series bodies. Just swap a few parts over and you are there. Not that dear either.

Nothing to stop you from pulling the old motor down later, in your own time, and doing it up.

Not trying to put you off but it isn't just out with the old and in with the new.

Have a look in the stickies for engine swap info and see if any of your mates has REAL experience in rebuilding.

Hope this helps.

Grumbles
