My EL airbag light flashes and then stays on.
I swapped it with my other good EL and it showed no light in that car and the good airbag didn't turn out the light in the old car Is there any other tests I can do prior to going to the auto elec. I have disconnected the dome light wiring and I also have some extra wire connector from the horns spare. |

similar thing happened to me, have you blown or replaced the airbag fuse? when I took mine out (accidentally), the airbag light came on for a few months, then worked normally again. Turns out the problem can be fixed if you head somewhere that can clear the error codes from your ECU (cause on an EL you can't just short out pins like on an EF).

remove the globe it worked for me, after resetting countless times it would go off again 2-3 months later. But you can pay the dollars for an expert to look at it if you want the airbag safety feature.

You are lucky you are in a behind state, if you had to get road worthy certificates every year your car can be failed for the warning light not working, not that every authorised inspector checks it or cares in NSW. Take it to your auto elec, the airbag will not work while the light is on, it could save you or love ones life in an accident.

This does not belong in the LPG and Alternative Fuels section. So it has been moved to Interior.

I forgot to ask if you know what code is flashing, our technical section normally has that info but for some reason it has an error (it has been logged).
The airbag module or passenger side air bag resister (if you don't have a passenger air bag) can be faulty, it was fairly common for the resister to be at fault when EF/EL were new or nearly new.

yeah do a diagnostic on the airbag system and see what code it is.
Air Bag Diagnostic Document

Apart from the safety implications already mentioned, normally, the airbag unit near the pedalbox should beep if the airbag light is blown or removed.shannonwulff wrote: Turns out the problem can be fixed if you head somewhere that can clear the error codes from your ECU (cause on an EL you can't just short out pins like on an EF). Some EL's can be reset by DIY - you need to check the diagnosis connector if the reset pin is fitted.

it needs a scan tool to clear the code, we see them at work all the time

Mine's been flashing a "code 12" at me for ages now, which is supposed to be a low battery alarm.
My battery is new, alternator works fine and battery works fine (otherwise the stereo wouldn't work and it wouldn't run by now). It keeps blowing the airbag fuse when I've tried putting another one in... I'm at a loss now, and the error won't disappear after having the machine plugged in and trying to clear it. The only thing I can think of is maybe there's a short somewhere in the system if the fuse keeps blowing?? Where is best to start looking? My cousin is an auto sparky and I've been to see him, he's asked if I can possibly get some pointers from you guys. Thanks in advance! -Jais

Off the top of my head, I'd suspect the clockspring and where the loom goes through the firewall, as possible areas for a short.
Clockspring is easiest to start with - unplug the steering column lower plug - 2 pin on it's own. Put your fuse in and see what happens - you should get the code for the airbag open circuit hopefully, if not, the fault is elsewhere. Code 12 should reset easily enough - only thing is when there are multiple hardwire faults, they need to be fixed and reset, as the system can only indicate one fault code at a time (if you understand what I'm saying).

Mine originally was flashing code 12 , and i found a blown fuse. After i replaced that it flashed code 52. At this stage i needed a roadworthy done on the car so before i tried resetting it myself i took it to a mechanics for the roadworthy . He tried to reset it with some diagnostic unit or something , but it didnt work so that night i reset it myself, and has been fine ever since.
